Bernstein: Selections from Candide

This performance is co-presented with the Virginia Arts Festival. These performances are made possible through a generous gift from the Susan Goode Performance Fund.
As part of the Virginia Symphony's season-long observance of America 250, this concert takes a look at the role music played in one of the most tumultuous times in the history of the world. At the 1945 Potsdam Conference, works by Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Kreisler, and others were one of the only things that united the assembled Allies, represented by President Harry Truman, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin. In this new production, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will incorporate storytelling to demonstrate the power of music and how Hampton Roads played a pivotal role in this momentous event.
Celebrating his fifth season, Eric Jacobsen serves as the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s twelfth Music Director. He is also the artistic director and co-founder of The Knights, a uniquely adventurous NYC-based chamber orchestra, and the music director of the Orlando Philharmonic. In addition to conducting, Eric is a dedicated chamber musician (cello) and is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.
Valet Parking is available for purchase.
